I`m surrounded by thousands of mopeds. My heart is beating fast and I`m not sure I will survive crossing the street in this insane chaos. They are honking their horns at me, not because I`m in the middle of the road, but because I hesitate and make them nervous. I come from a country where traffic safety is of upmost importance and here I am surrounded by kids not wearing helmets.

Ba Bé, Vietnam 2016

I wake up to the sound of drums filling the valley with pounding beats. A funeral procession passes by our hostel carrying a colourfully wrapped coffin. I follow them discreetly with my camera for a few shots, but then to my surprise two men spot me and invite me to take part in their journey. We are unable to communicate as we do not speak the same language, so we speak through hand gestures and smiles. Humbly, I accept the invitation and join the procession. I watch as they form a white line slowly climbing the steep path up the mountain to a spot already prepared for the occasion. Friends and family cry to the sound of beating drums as the beautiful decoration is slowly inhaled by flames and the coffin lowered six feet under. The old man’s journey has come to an end as he is put to rest at the foot of the mountain.
